Faithfulness Day #3: The Preservation in the Famine
“Then Joseph said to his brothers, ‘Come close to me.’ When they had done so, he said, ‘I am your brother Joseph, the one you sold into Egypt! And now, do not be distressed and do not be angry with yourselves for selling me here, because it was to save lives that God sent me ahead of you. For two years now there has been famine in the land, and for the next five years there will be no plowing and reaping. But God sent me ahead of you to preserve for you a remnant on earth and to save your lives by a great deliverance. So then, it was not you who sent me here, but God…'” — Genesis 45:4–8 (NIV)

THE JOURNEY
The backdrop of this narrative is a severe, geopolitical crisis layered over decades of deep familial betrayal and hidden suffering. A catastrophic famine had gripped the entire ancient Near East, drying up the fields, destroying the harvests, and threatening entire nations with starvation. Back in the land of Canaan, the patriarchal family of Jacob—the very line carries the covenant promise of God—was facing absolute extinction. They were down to their last rations, completely unaware that across the border in Egypt, the solution to their crisis had been quietly developing in the dark for more than twenty years.
Decades prior, Jacob’s sons had brutally betrayed their younger brother Joseph, selling him into slavery and leaving him for dead. Joseph endured years of unjust imprisonment, isolation, and foreign exile. Yet, behind the scenes of his suffering, the unshakeable faithfulness of God was strategically mapping out a great deliverance. God navigated Joseph through the pit, the slave market, and the dungeon, ultimately elevating him to the right hand of Pharaoh as the prime minister of Egypt. When the famine struck, Joseph was uniquely positioned with total authority over the nation’s grain reserves. God did not stop the famine from happening; instead, He sent a man ahead to preserve His elect people and keep the covenant line alive.
Heart of the Matter
The famine represents those seasons of life where everything around you feels barren, dry, and depleted. It is the sudden loss of income, the drying up of inspiration, or a prolonged trial that threatens to consume your future. In the middle of a drought, our immediate reaction is to look at our empty cupboards and assume that God’s plan has failed or that the enemy has won a permanent victory over us.
But the mystery of Joseph’s elevation reveals that God’s faithfulness operates on a strategic timeline that far outlasts our current pain. God frequently uses the very betrayals, setbacks, and “dungeons” of our past to position us for a future rescue. What your enemies meant for evil, God intentionally re-routes for your ultimate good. He is never reactionary; He is always thousands of steps ahead of your crisis. Your current season of lack is not a surprise to Him—He has already spent years preparing the storehouses of Egypt to sustain you.
Faith in Action
The faithfulness of God is applied when we stop tracking our past wounds and start trusting God’s hidden positioning.
The Challenge: Reframe a painful past setback through the lens of God’s sovereign positioning today.
- Release the Jailers: Think of a person or a situation that treated you unfairly in the past. Consciously choose to release resentment, declaring: “They did not send me into this difficult space; God permitted it to position me for His glory.”
- Trust the Storehouse: When you look at a current shortage in your life today, remind your soul: “God has already sent provisions ahead of me. My future survival is guaranteed by His track record.”
- The Storehouse Prayer: Find a quiet space, steady your heart, and pray: “Sovereign Lord, You are the Architect of Deliverance. I confess that I often panic when the land around me goes dry. Forgive my short-sightedness. Today, I choose to believe that You have gone ahead of me into my future. I trust that the trials, delays, and betrayals of my past are being woven into a great preservation. Hold me steady in the drought, knowing that Your storehouses are full. Amen.”
Prayer for the Day
Sovereign God, You are the Master of the Seasons, and Your faithfulness spans across generations. I confess that when I am in a dry place, I easily forget how You have used my past trials to build my current strength. Wash away my anxiety over this barren season. Give me the grace to forgive those who have wronged me, the patience to wait out the drought, and the deep conviction that You are working behind the scenes to preserve everything You have promised me. Amen.
THE STONE OF REMEMBRANCE
“But God sent me ahead of you to preserve for you a remnant on earth…” — Genesis 45:7 (Our Memorial Translation: “Human hands may plot your exile, but the Covenant God uses the journey to position your rescue.”)
