Risen Life Day #18: Open Hands, Open Hearts

“All the believers were together and had everything in common. They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need.”Acts 2:44–45 (NIV)

THE JOURNEY

Jordan had always been careful with money.

He budgeted wisely, saved consistently, and made sure he was prepared for the future. There was nothing wrong with that—but over time, his carefulness quietly turned into tightness.

He gave—but only when it felt comfortable.
He helped—but only when it didn’t cost too much.

One Sunday, his church shared a story about a family going through an unexpected medical crisis. The need was urgent. The situation was overwhelming.

Jordan felt a strong pull in his heart to give.

But immediately, the internal dialogue started:

That’s more than I usually give.
What about my plans?
What if I need that later?

He wrestled with it all afternoon.

Then a simple thought cut through the noise:

If God has given me everything, why am I holding so tightly to what I have?

That evening, Jordan gave—not from obligation, but from surrender.

And something surprising happened.

It didn’t feel like loss.

It felt like freedom.

For the first time, he realized that generosity wasn’t about money.

It was about trust.

Heart of the Matter

The early church didn’t just believe in the resurrection.

They lived like it changed everything.

Acts 2 describes a community where people held their possessions loosely and their relationships tightly.

They gave freely.
They shared openly.
They responded to needs without hesitation.

This kind of generosity was not driven by pressure—it was driven by transformation.

When you truly understand the resurrection, your perspective shifts.

You realize:

• your life is not your own
• your resources are not your ultimate security
• your future is already secured in Christ

And when that truth takes root, something changes in how you hold what you have.

Here is the dynamic of the Risen Life:

You love God by releasing control over what you hold tightly.
You trust Him enough to give, share, and respond when needs arise.

He loves you back by filling your life with a deeper sense of purpose, provision, and freedom.
Generosity becomes less about what you lose and more about what God does through you.

The early believers didn’t give because they had extra.

They gave because they understood:

Everything they had already came from God.

The resurrection frees you from the fear of not having enough—

so you can live with open hands.

Faith in Action

Generosity begins with surrender.

The Challenge:

Ask yourself:

• What am I holding onto too tightly?
• Where is God prompting me to give or help?

It could be:

• finances
• time
• encouragement
• resources

Choose one act of generosity today.

Make it intentional.

Make it meaningful.

Write this declaration:

“I trust God more than I trust what I hold.”

Then act on it.

Prayer for the Day

Risen Lord, thank You that because of You, my life is secure and my future is held in Your hands. Forgive me for the times I hold tightly to what You have given me, driven by fear or control. Teach me to live with open hands and a generous heart. Help me to see needs around me and respond with compassion and courage. Thank You that I can trust You to provide, to sustain, and to use what I give for something greater than myself. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
