I AM Day #3: The Unchanging Anchor
“Moses said to God, ‘Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, “The God of your fathers has sent me to you,” and they ask me, “What is his name?” Then what shall I tell them?’ God said to Moses, ‘I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: “I AM has sent me to you.”‘” — Exodus 3:13–14 (NIV)
THE JOURNEY
The backdrop of this narrative is an atmosphere of deep identity loss, historical trauma, and four hundred years of crushing systemic oppression. The children of Israel were enslaved under the brutal iron fist of Egypt, their cries for justice seemingly lost in the silence of the centuries. Moses, their would-be deliverer, was an eighty-year-old fugitive hiding in the back side of the wilderness, keeping sheep on a mountain that did not belong to him. His speech was halting, his confidence was shattered, and his past attempt to save his people had ended in total failure and exile. When the glory of God suddenly manifested in a bush that burned with fire but was never consumed, Moses was paralyzed by inadequacy. He knew that if he walked back into Egypt armed only with human credentials or an abstract, philosophical idea of God, he would be instantly laughed out of Pharaoh’s court and rejected by his own people. He demanded a name—a legal authority, an anchor-hold heavy enough to stand against the empire of the world.
But right out of the middle of the unconsumed flame, the Lord issued a cosmic declaration that permanently redefined the nature of reality. God did not give Moses a typical title that could be categorized alongside the localized, changing deities of Egypt. Instead, He unveiled His supreme, self-existent signature: “I AM WHO I AM.” In the Hebrew text, this is Ehyeh Asher Ehyeh—the Uncaused Cause, the Self-Sustaining Being who depends on absolutely nothing outside of Himself to exist. By declaring, “I AM has sent me to you,” the Lord established an unyielding anchor-hold for Israel’s faith. He revealed that He does not shift, grow, or diminish with the passing of time, the rise of empires, or the failure of human strength. He simply is. The burning bush was a physical demonstration of this reality: a fire fueled entirely by its own nature, requiring no earthly wood to keep it burning. God proved that His covenant commitment to His elect is backed by an unchanging, permanent infrastructure that outlasts the stars.
Heart of the Matter
The halting inadequacy of Moses represents those overwhelming, high-stress seasons of life where you feel completely unqualified to handle the assignment standing in front of you. It is the terrifying reality of stepping into a new leadership role where you feel like an absolute fraud, the exhausting burden of raising a family in an unstable world, or the sudden confrontation with a massive problem that makes you feel entirely too small, too weak, and too damaged to survive. In those intimidated moments, when you look at your limited resources and your flawed track record, anxiety whispers that you have no authority, that your past failures define you, and that the opposition is going to crush you.
But the revelation of the Unchanging Anchor reveals that the success of your calling is never dependent on the strength of your credentials, but on the immutable identity of the One who sent you. When God wraps your life in His “I AM” signature, He anchors your future to His own self-existent permanence. He does not change His mind about you when you slip up, He does not lose power when the world goes chaotic, and He does not require you to provide the fuel for your own breakthrough. He simply asks you to hide your weakness inside His absolute stability. When the undercurrent of doubt tries to pull your life out to sea, you must stop measuring your own capacity and look at the chain. Look at the signature track record: the Anchor holds because the Great I AM never shifts.
Faith in Action
The identity of the great I AM is applied when we stop defining ourselves by our deficits and begin anchoring our perspective to who He is.
The Challenge: Stop negotiating with your own inadequacies today and explicitly declare the unchanging authority of the Great I AM over your assignment.
- Drop the Self-Defeating Dialogue: Identify the specific areas where you have been telling yourself, “I am not strong enough, I am not smart enough, I am not ready.” Cut the script off and declare: “I may not be enough, but the Great I AM is my sender, and His identity is my absolute authority today.”
- Abide in the Permanent: Refuse to let your emotional stability be dictated by the shifting news, changing circumstances, or people’s erratic opinions today. Anchor your mind to His word.
- The Unchanging Anchor Prayer: Find a quiet space, plant your feet firmly on the ground, and pray: “Self-Existent Father, You are the Great I AM, the Unchanging Anchor of my Soul. I confess that I have allowed my own deep inadequacies, my past failures, and the intimidating size of my challenges to fill my heart with terror and spiritual vertigo. Forgive me for relying on my own fragile wood to keep my fire burning. Today, I anchor my life entirely to Your flawless track record. I thank You that You never change, never diminish, and never fail. Stand tall in my weakness, back my steps with Your sovereign authority, and let my endurance be a monument to Your unyielding name. Amen.”
Prayer for the Day
Immutable Lord of Eternity, You are the God who dwells in unapproachable light and holds the fabric of time steady by the word of Your power, and Your covenant identity is my permanent sanctuary. I confess that I easily panic and lose my footing when the storms of this life shake my natural security and expose my limitations. Wash away my identity crises and my deep anxiety today. Give me the profound, quiet composure to stand bold before the Pharaohs of my circumstances, knowing that the Uncaused Cause is backing my life. I rest securely in Your unyielding character, confident that because You are, I will stand. Amen.
