Peace Day #24: The Peace of the “Hedge”

“Have you not put a hedge around him and his household and everything he has? You have blessed the work of his hands, so that his flocks and herds are spread throughout the land.”Job 1:10 (NIV)

THE JOURNEY

In agricultural history, a hedge was more than a decoration; it was a living fortification. Unlike a stone wall that could be toppled or a wooden fence that could rot, a proper hedge was a dense, thorny, and interwoven barrier. It kept the predators out and the vulnerable “peace” of the flock in. It was a boundary that allowed those inside to graze, rest, and grow without the constant terror of an external attack.

Many people today feel like they are living in an “Open Field.” They feel exposed to every wind of public opinion, every economic shift, and every personal criticism. Without a sense of protection, they spend their energy in a state of hyper-vigilance, looking over their shoulder for the next crisis. They want peace, but they feel like the world has a “backdoor” into their hearts that they can’t quite close.

In the book of Job, even the Accuser acknowledged a spiritual reality: God had placed a “hedge” around Job. This wasn’t a hedge that kept Job from ever facing a challenge, but it was a hedge that governed what could touch his soul. When we realize that our lives are not random and unprotected, but are strategically surrounded by the favor and presence of God, our internal posture shifts. We move from the anxiety of the “exposed field” to the security of the “fenced garden.”

Heart of the Matter

The concept of a “hedge” is the spiritual answer to the feeling of being overwhelmed. We often lose our peace because we feel like we have to defend ourselves against the entire world at once.

The Peace of the Hedge is found in these core principles:

  1. The Presence as Protection: The “hedge” is not a physical wall, but the very presence of God. Psalm 125:2 says, “As the mountains surround Jerusalem, so the Lord surrounds his people.” Peace comes from knowing that any trouble trying to reach you must first pass through the hands of a Sovereign King. You are not fighting for victory; you are resting within a Victor.
  2. The Blessing of Boundaries: A hedge defines what is yours and what is not. Much of our unrest comes from trying to manage things outside our hedge—other people’s opinions, global events, or the “flocks” of our neighbors. Peace is the ability to focus on the “work of your hands” within the boundaries God has set for you, trusting Him to guard the perimeter.

You don’t have to be your own bodyguard when you realize who is standing at your borders.

Faith in Action

Peace is maintained by recognizing the invisible protection that surrounds your life.

The Challenge: Identify one area where you feel “exposed” or “threatened” today (e.g., your reputation, your finances, or a specific relationship).

  1. The Hedge Visualization: Close your eyes and visualize a strong, living hedge of God’s presence surrounding you, your family, and your current responsibilities.
  2. The Boundary Prayer: Throughout the day, when a worrying thought tries to “climb the fence,” say out loud: “Lord, I thank You for the hedge. You are my shield and my very great reward. This worry does not belong inside my garden.”
  3. The Stewardship Focus: Pick one thing today that is clearly “inside your hedge”—your current task, the person in front of you, or your own physical health. Give it your full, peaceful attention, letting go of everything outside the lines.

Prayer for the Day

Guardian of My Soul, I thank You that I do not live in an open field. Forgive me for the times I have lived in terror, forgetting the “hedge” of Your favor that surrounds me. I choose to trust in Your protective presence today. Quiet my hyper-vigilance and help me to rest in the security of Your boundaries. I bless the work of my hands and trust You to watch the perimeter of my life. Amen.
