Good Success Day #1: The Blueprint for Shalom
“Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.” — Joshua 1:8 (NIV)

THE JOURNEY
Consider the story of an architect named Arthur. Arthur was brilliant, driven, and singularly focused on building the tallest, most magnificent skyscraper the city had ever seen. He poured every waking hour into the aesthetic design. He imported Italian marble for the lobby, engineered a breathtaking glass facade, and secured millions in funding.
The building became a landmark. Architectural magazines put it on their covers. Arthur was wealthy, famous, and, by the world’s standards, incredibly successful.
But Arthur had ignored the geological surveys. He was so obsessed with how high the building could go that he didn’t spend the necessary time pouring a foundation deep enough into the bedrock.
Three years after the grand opening, a minor earthquake hit the city. The buildings around Arthur’s tower swayed and settled. But Arthur’s masterpiece—heavy, rigid, and poorly rooted—suffered catastrophic structural failure. The glass shattered. The marble cracked. The building had to be condemned.
Arthur realized too late that a building is only as successful as the foundation that holds it up. He had achieved massive vertical success, but it was completely unsustainable. He had the penthouse, but he lost the building.
This is the exact trap many of us fall into with our lives. We chase a specific metric of success—usually financial or career-driven. We sacrifice our sleep, our marriages, our stress levels, and our quiet time with God to build our “tower.” We might even achieve the promotion or the bank balance we wanted. But because the foundation (our soul and our relationships) was neglected, the success eventually crushes us. The stress leads to burnout, the neglected marriage ends in divorce, or the compromised health leads to a hospital bed.
That is not the success God designed for you.
Heart of the Matter
The world defines success by accumulation: more money, more status, more power. But God defines success by alignment. The biblical word for this holistic well-being is Shalom. It doesn’t just mean “peace” in the sense of quietness; it means nothing missing, nothing broken. It is complete wholeness.
In Joshua 1:8, God gives Joshua the blueprint for taking the Promised Land. He doesn’t give him military strategy or financial advice. He tells him to align his mind and actions with God’s Word. Then his way will be prosperous, and then he will have “good success.”
Proverbs 10:22 says, “The blessing of the Lord brings wealth, without painful toil for it.” Some translations say, “He adds no sorrow with it.” This is the defining characteristic of “Good Success.” God’s version of prosperity does not extract a toll from your soul. If your career is flourishing but your children don’t know you, that is not Good Success. If your ministry is exploding but your physical health is failing due to stress, that is not Good Success.
God wants you to prosper holistically. He cares about your bank account, your blood pressure, your marriage, and your mind. When you build on His foundation—prioritizing your soul’s alignment with Him above your hustle—He builds a life that can actually sustain the weight of the blessing.
Faith in Action
Today, we are going to look at the structural integrity of your life.
The Challenge: Rate your current level of “success” (1-10) in these four foundational pillars:
- Spiritual: How connected to God do you feel?
- Relational: How healthy are your closest relationships (spouse, kids, best friends)?
- Physical/Mental: How is your body handling your current pace? Are you resting?
- Vocational/Financial: Are you stewarding your resources and talents well?
If you have a “10” in Vocation but a “2” in Physical or Relational, your building is leaning. Identify the weakest pillar today and ask God: “What is one step I can take today to reinforce this area?”
Prayer for the Day
Lord, I confess that I have often chased the world’s version of success. I have exhausted myself building towers while neglecting my foundation. Forgive me for sacrificing my peace, my health, or my relationships on the altar of achievement. Today, I surrender my ambitions to You. I want Your ‘Good Success’—the kind that adds no sorrow. Teach me how to align my life with Your Word so that my soul prospers first. Build my life on Your bedrock. Amen.
SUCCESS Note
“Success is not a destination, but the road that you’re on. Being successful means that you’re working hard and walking your walk every day. You can only live your dream by working hard towards it. That’s living your dream.” — Marlon Wayans (But as the believer knows, true success is walking that road hand-in-hand with the Creator.)
