Love Day #5: The Face in the Crowd

“The Lord your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you; in his love he will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing.”Zephaniah 3:17 (NIV)

THE JOURNEY

My daughter, Lily, was the narrator for her first-grade class play. It was a production of “The Very Hungry Caterpillar,” and to say it was chaotic would be generous. The caterpillar costume fell apart, the butterfly cried, and the “apple” forgot his lines.

I sat in the third row of the dark auditorium. Lily stood center stage, clutching the microphone with two trembling hands. She was terrified.

Before she spoke a single word, she stopped. She didn’t look at the script. She didn’t look at the teacher. She scanned the audience. Her eyes darted frantically through the sea of shadows, looking for one specific thing.

She was looking for me.

When her eyes finally locked onto mine, I didn’t sit there with a neutral face. I didn’t check my watch. I leaned forward. I beamed. I gave her a huge, double-thumbs-up. I mouthed, “You got this! I love you!”

The transformation was instant. Her shoulders dropped. A smile broke across her face. She took a deep breath and delivered her lines with a sudden, booming confidence.

Why? Because she found her father’s face.

In that moment, she loved me by seeking me. She valued my presence above everyone else in the room. And I loved her back by delighting in her. I wasn’t grading her performance; I was celebrating her existence. My delight gave her the courage to be who she was.

Heart of the Matter

Many of us live with a “Performance Anxiety” spirituality. We think God is a critic sitting in the back row with a clipboard, grading our life’s performance. We worry that if we mess up our lines, He will walk out.

But Zephaniah 3:17 offers a radical image of God. It says He isn’t just watching you; He is singing over you. He takes “great delight” in you.

When you “love God” by seeking His face—when you scan the darkness of your life looking for Him—you are not going to find a scowl. You are going to find a Father who is leaning forward, beaming with pride, not because you are perfect, but because you are His.

This is the beautiful cycle of love: You look for Him (that is your love), and you find Him rejoicing over you (that is His love). His delight is the fuel that gives you the strength to get through the play.

Faith in Action

We often project our own self-criticism onto God’s face. Today, we retrain the imagination.

The Challenge: Close your eyes for 60 seconds. Imagine you are walking into a room where Jesus is sitting. Visualize Him looking up and seeing you enter. The Twist: Do not let Him look neutral or disappointed. Visualize His face lighting up. Visualize Him smiling a genuine, “I’m so glad you’re here” smile.

Hold that image. If you struggle to see Him smiling, ask: “Lord, heal my view of You. Let me feel Your delight.”

Prayer for the Day

Lord of Joy, I confess that I often feel like I am just tolerating life, and that You are just tolerating me. I project my own disappointment onto You. But Your Word says You sing over me. You celebrate me. Today, I turn my eyes to the crowd to find Your face. Let me see Your smile. Let the weight of Your delight crush my insecurity. I love You because You first found joy in me. Amen.

LOVE Note

“God loves you simply because He has chosen to do so. He loves you when you don’t feel lovely. He loves you when no one else loves you. He loves you when you are weak… He delights in you.”Max Lucado
