Love Day #23: The Lantern Step
“Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.” — Psalm 119:105 (NIV)

THE JOURNEY
I once took a guided tour of a massive underground cavern system in Kentucky. We walked deep into the earth, surrounded by stalactites and ancient rock formations. At the deepest point, the guide told us all to stand still.
“I’m going to turn off the lights,” he announced. “Don’t move.”
Click.
The darkness was absolute. It was heavy, almost suffocating. I couldn’t see my hand in front of my face. I instantly felt a wave of panic. I had no idea where the path was or where the drop-offs were.
Then, the guide struck a single match.
It was a tiny flame, but in that oppressive darkness, it looked like a supernova. He held it down near his boots.
“This match doesn’t show you the exit,” he said softly. “It doesn’t show you the lunchroom upstairs. It only shows you where to put your foot next. If you want to get out, you have to stay close to the light.”
I realized then that I had been praying for God to give me a floodlight. I wanted to see the five-year plan. I wanted to know who I would marry, what job I would have, and how my finances would turn out in 2030. I wanted a map so I could run ahead.
But God rarely gives floodlights. He gives lamps. A lamp only illuminates a three-foot circle. To walk by a lamp, you have to move slowly, and more importantly, you have to stay right next to the person holding it.
Heart of the Matter
We often mistake God’s silence about our future for a lack of love. We scream, “Show me the big picture!”
But Psalm 119:105 says His word is a lamp for our feet. It is designed for intimacy, not independence.
If God gave you the 10-year plan right now, you would grab the map and run off without Him. You wouldn’t need Him; you would just need the data. But God wants a relationship.
Here is the dynamic: You love God by taking the next step in the dark. You stop demanding to see the destination. You say, “Lord, I don’t know where this is going, but I see You right here. I will take this one step with You.” He loves you back by keeping you on the path. He loves you by not showing you the scary cliffs ahead that would paralyze you. He loves you by ensuring that, while you may not see the destination, you will never walk off the edge as long as you are close to Him.
Faith in Action
Anxiety usually comes from trying to live in next week’s problems with today’s light.
The Challenge: Identify the one area where you are demanding a floodlight (e.g., “I need to know if this relationship will work out” or “I need to know if I’ll get the job”). Stop. Ask God: “What is the one obedient thing I can do today?”
- Maybe it’s sending one email.
- Maybe it’s washing the dishes.
- Maybe it’s praying for the person.
Do that one thing. Trust Him with tomorrow.
Prayer for the Day
Lord of the Light, I confess that I am afraid of the dark. I want a map, but You offer me a hand. Forgive me for demanding to see the ending before I begin. Today, I choose to love You by trusting the lamp. I will not worry about next year. I will simply take the next step of obedience. Thank You for loving me enough to walk beside me, ensuring I never stumble. You are enough light for today. Amen.
