Good News #302: Because of Jesus, Angels are Charged to Watch Over and Protect Me Always!
Years ago, I remember memorizing a prayer I was to pray to a singular angel called my guardian angel… to watch over me while I sleep.
First of all — the bible never teaches us to pray to angels.
Praying is a form of worship, an act done toward one considered to have power over you and your circumstance.
In the book of Revelation, we read about the apostle John caught up in the spirit seeing future events unfold… getting admonished twice by an angel when he fell down at the feet of one (see Revelation 19:10, 22:9). These angels were clear in their rebuke, saying they are fellow servants.
Even these angels know better than to take any glory reserved for God alone.
Prayer and worship should only be directed to the One True God — Father, Son and Holy Spirit who are One.
Second — the bible tells us we have more than one angel.
Psalm 91:11 says God gives His angels (plural) charge over you…
Also, in Matthew 26:53, Jesus said to Peter who tried to defend Jesus and cut off the ear of the high priest’s servant:
“… do you think that I cannot now pray to My Father, and He will provide Me with more than twelve legions of angels?”
That’s approximately 60,000 to 72,000 angels as a legion could have 5000 or 6000 soldiers.
Now, Romans 8:16-17 says:
The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs — heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ…
We are heirs of God… joint heirs with Jesus… which means Jesus gave us the undeserved privilege of being put under the charge of more than twelve legions of angels.
Isn’t that mind-blowing?
And to put the strength of an angel in perspective, consider that one angel can kill 185,000 soldiers singlehandedly in one night (see 2 Kings 19:35).
The gospel is this — God The Father made a provision for us to enjoy all of heaven’s best even charging angels over us.
This is our undeserved protection from God Himself who has become our Father through the sacrifice of Jesus.
We pray to The Father, Son and Holy Spirit who are One.
We worship and pray to Jesus who is the Lord of hosts (army of heaven) because to Him and His voice alone do they respond to protect us.
