Good News #295: Jesus’ Love and Compassion Towards Me is Everlasting and Never-Ending; Oh, How He Loves Me!
In Genesis 16, we read about Hagar, an egyptian maidservant of Sarai, Abram’s wife. (The Lord had not yet changed their names to Sarah and Abraham at this point).
Sarai gave Hagar to Abram so a child could be conceived to Abram…but when she conceived, Hagar began to despise Sarai… as a result, Sarai mistreated her.
Hagar ran away.
And in a spring in the desert, Hagar was met by the Angel of the Lord who spoke to her kindly saying He will increase her descendants that they will be too numerous to count…
Because of that encounter, Hagar named the Lord who spoke to her as “The God who sees”.
What is interesting about this is that Hagar probably never even heard of The God of Abraham because she is an egyptian… which means she is unaware of the existence of The God of Abraham… and yet, The God of Abraham met her and spoke to her that she understood for herself that He is the God who sees…
Fast forward to the new testament… God The Son came in the flesh and walked the earth… and He did the same to an unsuspecting widow, a mother whose only son died.
In Luke 7, we read about Jesus raising the dead son of a widow from Nain… Unlike other gospel accounts where someone sought Jesus to do something with either someone dying or someone dead (i.e. Jairus’ 12-year old daughter, Lazarus), noone was seeking Jesus to do something for the widow or for the dead young man…
YET… the bible says that Jesus SAW the widow and HAD COMPASSION on her…
The same God who saw Hagar and spoke kindly to her… is the same God in Jesus who saw the widow and had compassion on her… AND raised her son from the dead.
The gospel is this — Jesus is the same yesterday, today and forever.
The Lord who saw Hagar and saw the widow of Nain is the same Jesus who sees you.
And just as He had compassion on both unsuspecting women who was not seeking Him, Jesus will have compassion on you as well.
