Good News #268: Jesus So Loves Me and It Pains Him to See Me Hurt, Get Sick, Be in Misery – He Saves Me From All of Life’s Troubles!

In reading the gospels, Jesus never wept because of the feeling of rejection by the people.

It almost seems like He is unconcerned about His own benefit and welfare.

What we find though is Jesus weeping in two occasions — when He stood outside Lazarus’ tomb and when He drew near Jerusalem and saw the city.

Jesus wept outside Lazarus’ tomb… NOT because He was sad Lazarus was dead… He KNEW He was going to raise Lazarus from the dead… Jesus wept because the grief that death brought to those around pained Him…

Jesus wept over Jerusalem… NOT because He feels rejected by the people of Jerusalem…
Jesus wept over Jerusalem because He knows the pain and trouble they will go through because of their unwillingness to have Him protect them…

How do we know this? Because Luke 19:42-44 records Jesus’ words as He weeps:
“If you had known, even you, especially in this your day, the things that make for your peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes.
For days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment around you, surround you and close you in on every side, and level you, and your children within you, to the ground and they will not leave in you one stone upon another, because you did not know the time of your visitation.”

In Luke 13:34, we read Jesus saying these words:
“Jerusalem, Jerusalem, that kills the prophets, and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, like a hen gathers her own brood under her wings, and you refused!”

Jesus weeps not for Himself but for us…

The gospel is this — Our God longs to protect us from all the pains, hurts and troubles but out of respect for our free will and out of His love for us, He waits to be allowed… because love is not love when it is forced.
