Good News #35: I Focus on the Obedience of Christ, Not Obedience to Anyone or Anything!

For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ…

2 Corinthians 10:4-5

The gospel produces obedience… unforced, freewill, effortless obedience…

But just because it does… does not mean that the gospel is about man’s obedience. It never was and never will be.

For over a thousand years, the old covenant of the law was in place demanding man’s obedience… but none can attain perfect obedience because man’s nature is fallen. This is the very reason why Jesus came as Man in sinless flesh to fulfill the law to its last tittle…in our behalf.

Because man just cannot…not even the best of us…

Even Moses, whom the law was given through, disobeyed God and forfeited his opportunity to enter the promised land when he hit the rock twice instead of speaking to it in Numbers 20.

Even David, whom God calls a man after His own heart, committed adultery with Bathsheba and murdered her husband Uriah.

Even Abraham, whom God calls His friend, lied TWICE about Sarah so he can save his own skin.

Humanity cannot.

So Jesus came to fulfill it all in our behalf.

And everyone, who believes in Jesus as the Son of God who came to be The Saviour receives His perfect obedience to the Father unto death which fulfilled the law in humanity’s behalf as atonement for their sins.

This is the crux of the gospel — the PERFECT OBEDIENCE “OF” CHRIST which produces obedience “to” Christ.

Let’s make sure we understand the distinction because there is a whole universe of difference between His perfect obedience and our finite obedience.

The centrality of the gospel is JESUS and about JESUS alone.
And what a gospel Jesus is!!!
