Day 10: My Body is the Temple of the Holy Spirit

Unlike in the Old Testament times when the Holy Spirit may leave a person when aggrieved, in the New Covenant of Grace that we are living right now, the Holy Spirit has been bequeathed into each and every one of Christ-believers. Our bodies have become the Holy Spirit’s temple. Why is this very important to know and believe?

Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore, honor God with your bodies.

1 Corinthians 6:19-20

First, Christ-believers need not worry that the Holy Spirit will leave us at any time. This is a great assurance for us – as we know that no matter what’s happening and wherever we may be, we are not alone. The Holy Spirit keeps on providing us with the leading, guidance and wisdom in everything that we are doing or about to do. Even in times of weakness, in times when we are faced with decisions that would compromise our faith, the Holy Spirit will keep reminding us of our righteousness in Christ!

…He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness…of sin, because they do not believe in Me; of righteousness, because I go to My Father and you see Me no more.

John 16:8–10

Second, as temples of the Holy Spirit, it is our responsibility to make it worthy of being a temple. It doesn’t have to be perfect, but constantly a work in progress. In every decision that Christ-believers do, consideration of the truth that the Holy Spirit is indwelling in us is worthy to consider. For instance, ask whether putting in yourself a lot of pressure is honoring God with your bodies? Ask whether having unhealthy habits is honoring God with your bodies? Ask whether getting into destructive behaviors is honoring God with your bodies? If you answered NO to any one of those questions, then the beauty here even more, is the truth that the Holy Spirit is already in you to lead, guide and provide you wisdom to get out of those habits and behaviors, so in the long-run you are able to honor God with your body.
